Lincolnshire and Rutland Workplace Learning Advocates
Project Regional Award
East Midlands

Lincolnshire and Rutland Workplace Learning Advocates (WLA) is a network of colleagues who champion learning opportunities in non-unionised workplaces. It is peer led with management support in each participating workplace, led nationally by Workbase Training and The Johnston Partnership. Learning can be both formal and informal, during and after work, and subjects vary from beekeeping and maths to first aid and vocational qualifications.

Since April 2011, initiated by the Lincolnshire and Rutland Employment and Skills Board, part of the Local Employer partnership to improve the local skills base, over 40 WLAs from a range of workplaces across Lincolnshire and Rutland have trained to undertake their role, many completing an NVQ Level 2 qualification in Information and Advice, and around 600 employees have engaged in learning in participating workplaces.

More than35 employers from manufacturing, the construction industry, social housing, digital technology and micro businesses currently participate, reaping the benefits of a more confident and cohesive workforce. Mortons of Horncastle had offered an ‘Out of Hours’ club to employees for over ten years, but in September 2011 they became a model and exemplar for the WLA network and now enjoy being able to share and gain ideas with other WLAs. Fran Lovely, a WLA at Mortons, said, “We hope that some of our enthusiasm helps others to realise that learning can be fun, enjoyable and worthwhile.”
